Pre-Vocational/ Company Training

Pre-vocational, intensive training is offered at Charles Academy of Dance on an invitational basis. This is designed for students wanting to study dance at a greater level, training them for a potential future within the performing arts field and if desired helping them to secure entry into a full-time vocational college in their later years to train as a professional. Our mini, junior and senior company programmes are designed to follow on consecutively from one another, and will prepare a student to audition for full-time vocational training at 18 years (occasionally 16 years in exceptional circumstances).

Training is delivered by our team of highly skilled and experienced professionals in a wide variety of genres. Previous students taught by our tutors have gone on to successfully audition and gain places at a variety of top colleges including; London Studio Centre, Bodyworks, Urdang Academy, Bird College, Performers College, Italia Conti, Tring Park, Masters, Laine, London Contemporary and Millennium Studios to name but a few. Other ex-students have followed Dance/Performance degrees at Universities or been supported through their teaching qualifications entering onto programmes of study with the ISTD or RAD.

Our programmes are designed to offer an ‘all-encompassing’ approach to dancing, with training and exams offered in all styles of performance, as dancers nowadays must be versatile and highly skilled in all genres to secure work in the future. We are confident that our Intensive Programme students will graduate with experience and knowledge in all styles, and this will provide them with secure understanding, expertise and technical training to choose their own future career…whether they wish to train as a ballerina, commercial dancer, contemporary dancer, dance teacher, West End musical theatre performer, choreographer or tap dancer!

We offer a happy, supportive and nurturing environment for our Intensive Students and over their years of training they will receive continual assessment and feedback. Exams in modern, ballet, tap and jazz are offered, and our results to date have been exceptional. Additionally, Intensive Programme students participate in competitive dance festivals, and are offered many opportunities to attend outside workshops, events and schemes to help increase stage exposure and develop performance experience. Careers advice and audition preparation can also be provided to senior students when needed. Entry to our Intensive Programmes is via invitation only. Entry into our company programme can begin from 5 – 8 years in the Mini Company class. The programme formalises at 8 – 12 years  when students are invited to join Junior Company and Senior Company typically begins at 13+ years, although these guidelines do vary based on experience and ability.

The focus at the junior age is to promote the enjoyment and a love of dance, and whilst our younger students are busy having fun in their dance class, we are hard at work ensuring they are developing a strong technical foundation in each genre. Junior Company students will typically start along the exam route, participate in performance opportunities and  learn the important foundations towards becoming a trained-dancer. They begin to develop the skills and knowledge of how to safely warm up, cool-down and stretch as a dancer and learn the basics of partnering and contact work, as well as developing their skills in improvisation and choreography. They also improve their performance skills, confidence and stage presence through actual stage exposure, through our Academy show and other performance opportunities throughout the year. Students are encouraged to attend extra workshops, summer-schools as well as performing locally at various events.
We believe for this age the focus is to develop confidence, performance skills and artistry, but we do not expect our junior students to be making decisions towards their future careers just yet! The scheme simply prepares and gives our younger students the skills to be able join the Senior Programme when they are ready and ensures they are technically able to cope with the demands of the next level of training.

Our second level of training typically begins at the age of 13 years+. The senior programme is designed to prepare students wishing to audition for full-time vocational colleges at the age of 18 years, those looking to pursue another dance-related career, or sometimes just for those students who wish to reach the top of their game whilst a teenager and develop their dance potential to the maximum. Students are trained in the more complex skills of choreography, pas de deux, improvisation, lifts and contact work, skills and tricks, core strengthening and limbering, audition technique and complex turns, leaps and jumps and should by this stage be developing as confident performers both on stage and in class. It is helpful for students to consider studying music, drama and singing at school/6th form (possibly at GCSE or A Level) to compliment their dance education at Charles Academy.

We believe our Company Programme offers a fairly unique package within the South West, and are extremely proud of the results achieved to date. Students graduate with an ‘all-round’ dance education, versatile and skilled in any style – and with the right approach and attitude from them are given every single opportunity to achieve whatever future goals they desire.

When joining Company, we expect our students to show a high level of dedication, commitment and loyalty to their group, and most importantly hard work and enthusiasm. Company students should be role models to the rest of our Academy and we ask that all times they work with a focussed and positive attitude, with excellent attendance. Students at this level should be developing a high degree of artistry, musicality, flexibility, technique and understanding of dance.
